Chongqing: A Fusion of Architecture and Cuisine

Combining Hot Pot Bases with Local Landmarks

In Chongqing, the leader of the food industry is Chongqing hot pot, and the top 30 food rankings in Chongqing can all be hot pot restaurants. The oil, incense, and hemp at the bottom of the hot pot make Chongqing diners salivate. In this set of posters, Yueyang Mao, the designer, took a homogeneous approach, combining hot pot bases with local landmarks in Chongqing.

In this poster, various famous buildings in Chongqing, China are combined with hot pot bases, such as "Hongya Cave," "Chongqing Grand Theater," and "Yangtze River Ropeway." This fusion of architecture and cuisine not only creates visually stunning artwork but also conveys more information about the city. The combination of these elements showcases the unique culture and culinary delights of Chongqing.

The designer, Yueyang Mao, explains that the inspiration for this design came from the desire to move away from the traditional landscape collage often used in city posters. By incorporating local characteristic food, animals, and plants, Mao aimed to create a more creative and informative design. The poster serves as a platform to increase the amount of information conveyed about the city, going beyond the usual tourist attractions.

The design process presented its challenges. Mao used the scene of eating hot pot to combine with the panda soaking in the hot spring, interacting with the panda with the hot pot ingredients, such as "eating bamboo shoots" and "holding floating meatballs and green onions." The design also changed the proportion of the panda itself, adding a touch of humor. These creative and technical challenges were overcome to create a design that is both visually appealing and informative.

The poster, with its unique combination of architecture, cuisine, and local elements, is suitable for introducing scenes from cities such as airports and high-speed rail stations, providing destination options for travelers on the go. The design has the potential to be printed on various daily necessities such as paper bags and socks, further showcasing the fusion of art and everyday life.

Although the design has not been implemented yet, it has already received recognition. Yueyang Mao's Chongqing poster was awarded Iron in the A' Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Chongqing poster is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.

Yueyang Mao's Chongqing poster is a testament to the power of design in capturing the essence of a city and its culture. By combining architecture, cuisine, and local elements, the poster serves as a visual representation of Chongqing's unique identity. It not only showcases the city's landmarks but also celebrates its culinary heritage, inviting viewers to explore and experience the vibrant city of Chongqing.
